Support for the veterinary community

Paragon Veterinary Referrals is extremely proud to support Vetlife, our chosen charity for 2018.

Vetlife supports those within the veterinary community across the UK who have emotional, health or financial difficulties, providing free and confidential advice. It provides support in the shape of three core services, which are the Vetlife Helpline, which is run by volunteers and available 24/7, 365 days a year; Health support, run by mental health professionals; and Financial support, which provides assistance to vets or their dependents who find themselves in difficulty.

The charity, which has existed for nearly 120 years, has revealed it has seen a 500 per cent rise in calls and emails from veterinary professionals seeking support over the past five years. Vetlife Helpline Manager, Rosie Allister, BSc (Hons) BVSc, MSc MRCVS said:

"We know it isn't easy as a veterinary professional to ask for help, that's why Vetlife helpline is completely confidential, and offers anonymous email as an option for contact if people don't want to use the phone.

Vetlife are available 24 hours a day, and want to hear from anyone in the veterinary community who is struggling. Calls and emails to the Vetlife helpline can be about any issue, it doesn't have to be related to work; common themes in our calls are concerns about mental health, workplace stress, and employment and career issues, but people in the veterinary community can call us about anything. We'll be there to listen."

Ian Monteith, managing director of Paragon Veterinary Referrals, said the centre's support of Vetlife aligned itself perfectly with Paragon's focus on wellbeing, not just through a dedicated wellbeing programme for staff, but also for veterinary colleagues working in the local area.

"Over the course of 2018 we will be aiming to raise both awareness and money for such a worthwhile charity. Paragon has already ordered some rugby ball shape stress balls with Vetlife's contact details printed on them, which are soon to be distributed to first opinion vets in our community of Yorkshire and beyond.

In terms of fundraising, we will be making a donation to Vetlife for each referral patient we treat in 2018 and for every vet who, throughout the year, signs up as a Paragon Veterinary Professional member on the Members Area of the Paragon website and registers their contact preferences. There will also be a number of fundraising events throughout the year, where we hope to involve members of our local veterinary community together with local people, which we will use to raise further money and awareness for Vetlife."
